The older brother of Etta and Hattie McDaniel, Sam McDaniel was the first of the siblings to reach Los Angeles and helped the others find their first acting jobs. Over a 30-year career, McDaniel appeared in hundreds of feature films, shorts, and television shows, almost always playing an unnamed service employee, and usually without screen credit. McDaniel appeared briefly as a porter in a 1955 episode of “I Love Lucy,” the only Black actor to ever speak on the show.
